Guardian of the Winds

Weed Army Community Hospital Lobby
Fort Irwin, CA

13’ x 10’ x .7’, aluminum, lacquer, dye solvents, fused glass

Not just a representation of the Joshua Tree but a celebration of the exuberance of it while flowering and strength of it in the desert environment. All the textures, rich colors and lights of the desert along with the the varied patterns of the tree itself growing among other strong and enduring plants will create a defining place-making statement. A desert hare will catch the eye of the children who come to this healing place.

Primarily water jet cut and formed aluminum allows me to both draw and sculp simultaneously while keeping the weight in mind. Brilliant transparent color to complement the sculpture as well as the area will be hand painted and rubbed on the varied textures and shapes. Accents of other metals, metal leaf and fused glass will provide a rich combination of texture, color and content. Hand brushed metal brings the artist hand into the metal itself. Symbolic horseshoe shapes subtly combined into the form create interest closer to the wall and remember the calvary beginning of this base.

The sculpted shapes as if blown by the wind are graceful, yet strong.
