Seeds to Salad

Watkins Elementary School, Washington DC
68" x 144" x 1", aluminum, fused glass, transparent color
Commissioned by the Department of General Services

Seeds to Salad is a vibrant wall sculpture that celebrates the joy of growing, harvesting, and learning. Created for Watkins Elementary School as part of the FoodPrints program, the artwork inspires curiosity and pride by elevating everyday fruits, vegetables, and seeds to larger-than-life status—almost as if they are classroom superheroes.

The work is composed of three layers—aluminum, fused glass, and transparent color—interwoven to create depth, motion, and discovery. The rich textures and saturated hues reflect the exuberance of the garden and its role as a living classroom. Peppers, carrots, leafy greens, sunflowers, and seeds appear to float, burst, and bloom—connecting students to the natural world and the cycles of growth they witness firsthand.

Installed in a school that values experiential learning, Seeds to Salad reinforces the idea that education grows from the ground up, one seed at a time.
